LED Wall Packs, how to select them

LED Wall Pack Lights are usually mounted on the perimetral walls of a building to illuminate the wall and the surroundings. May also be used indoors for gyms and places where people gather. LED wall pack fixtures are good to be used in damp locations as these normally come with IP 65 or greater. When deciding which is the right product for your place it can be confusing. There are a variety of types, wattages, lumens, shapes and color temperatures.

Select Wall Pack Lights by the lumens they provide

This decision should be made based on the height where the wall packs will be installed, the space between each wall pack fixture and how far you need to shine the light. Another factor will be the use of the lighted area. If you need to illuminate a parking area and for security, a lower lumens wall pack can be used, but if the building is a point of sale you should go for a wall pack that produces more light.

Select Wall Pack Lights by the beam angle

Traditional wallpacks equipped with HID bulbs are rectangular in shape with a prismatic lens and throw light forward and to the sides in a wide-angle where a big portion of the lumens are shined to the sky. These wallpacks are called non-cut-off. This type of wall pack can be replaced with an LED wall pack that will consume about 20% compared with the old technology. As an example, an 80W LED wall pack light will easily replace a 400W Metal Halide Wall Pack.

Half cut-off Wall Packs have usually a 45-degree angle and throw light down and to the front, while full cut-off LED wall packs only throw the light down and with a cut-off angle from 65 to 75 degrees to the front and sides. This type of wall pack light is used when installed at least 15 Ft above ground.

Installing a Wallpack

Most of our LED Wall Pack operate on 110-277VAC and must be hardwired to a junction box. For new fixtures in the area, you can select the shape according to the one you like more or according to the place where they will be mounted.

If you are replacing existing HID wall packs, we suggest replacing the existing fixtures with similar shape and size LED Wall Packs to avoid or at least reduce paint labor and use the already existing connections. Our incredibly long-lasting downlights are ideal for illuminating buildings, walkways, and entryways. Great for underpasses, loading docks, and parking garages, they also heighten safety and provide greater security for pedestrians.

HID Wall Packs Vs. LED Wall Pack Lights

If compared to lumens, Metal Halide or HPS lamps produce higher initial lumens than LED Wall Packs, but, since lamps are omnidirectional a big percentage of the light does not go where is needed even reflectors are used to redirect the beams. LED Wall Pack lights instead have all LEDs pointing towards where the light is wanted. Some of the Wall Pack Fixtures offered will have special lenses for better directionality, thus, the overall result is more efficacy, less power consumption and long lifespan.

Adding Photocell Control to your wall packs

Outdoor wall lights can be controlled via a timer, but that will require adjusting the timer every 1-2 months to pair with the changes in sunrise and sunset. Adding a photocell will turn on the wall pack at dusk and turn it off at dawn, no matter the season.

Still, adding a photocell to your lights may be tricky and the light may start cycling on-off-on-off it the photocell "sees" the light fixture that it is controlling. For better performance and to avoid this annoying issue, make sure to point the photocell towards the wall or "looking" away from the light under its control while avoiding pointing it looking to the sky as it will not last long due to direct sunlight or may get dirty and will turn on the light permanently.
